To build safer cars, we collect information from actual vehicle accidents to analyse their cause as well as the extent and nature of the injuries sustained. We call this process the "pursuit of real safety".
Extensive crash-test research conducted at Toyota's full-scale testing facilities helps us design cars that can withstand a variety of collisions, and also lessen the injury to pedestrians.
Research & Development
In our pursuit of real safety, we not only focus on the vehicle, but also research human driver behaviour that may lead to an accident. As these tests, including the effects of drowsiness or distraction, present risk even in a controlled test course environment, we developed one of the world's largest, and most realistic, driving simulators. Through simulation of actual accident conditions, repeated examination of driver behaviour and the effectiveness of safety equipment can be conducted.
We employ many technologies to help avoid accidents, but sometimes they're unavoidable, and that's where our passive safety features can help. Like our high integrity cabin which uses a body structure that is strong and does not deform easily.
We have developed a comprehensive range of advanced active safety features. Fast acting, computerised systems that automatically activate in emergency driving situations to help improve control and handling when it's most needed.
Toyota's research and development work on automotive safety is driven by the desire to ensure that our cars provide the ultimate in safety innovation - a goal we never cease to pursue.
